Places around Stansted

The town of Stansted and its airport are located 30 miles from London in the County of Essex.

The airport here is often used by the travellers who wish to travel to other parts of Europe on a holiday or for a quick break. As a result, Stansted has developed into a major tourist stop with numerous accommodation options.

Horse Racing

New market is easily accessible from Stansted, and is the home for English horse racing. Many visitors flock to see the races. Some of them feature the famous Group 1 flat horse race like the 1000 and 2000 Guineas.

There are several other attractions related to horse racing around Stansted even when there are no race meetings. There is the National horse racing museum who organize 2 hour long minibus tours which cover various yards and other places of interest.

The National stud is also closely located and they conduct a 90 minute tour of their facilities.

Aviation Museum

If you just have one day to spend in Stansted, you can spend a whole day at the aviation museum in Duxford. You can take the National Express service to Cambridge and from Cambridge take a local bus service from line No.7 which will take you to the museum. Both the National Express stop and the local bus stops are within a very short walking distance from each other.

The aviation museum has a large collection of civil and military aircraft. However, the museum mainly boasts of its military collection.

Rare military vehicles used in World War II are also part of the aviation museum collection.

Shopping at Stansted

One of the best places for shopping in Stansted is Braintree and Cressing. Outside of Braintree, there is a place called Freeport which has excellent designer outfit villages. One can find really interesting collection of designer wears here at good prices.

Cressing, which is also another nearby shopping spot is famous for its Cressing Temple which has an old Templar Barn. In the Cressing village, there is a interesting Norman village which has been recreated on the site of the Castle and the village also has a toy museum on the same site.

Forest

Nearby Stansted, there is Hatfield Forest which has many species of birds and animals. Hatfield was famous as a Hunting Forest used by the past royal family. The Royal Hatfield Forest is now owned by the National Trust.
