Things to Do Near Stansted Airport
Whenever Stansted is mentioned the first thing that comes to mind is the airport, but there is a lot more to the area than just that. If you find yourself staying in accommodation near Stansted Airport for a while there are plenty of things to do and attractions to see nearby.
London is very accessible from Stansted Airport via the Stansted Express, so whether you want to go shopping, sightseeing or enjoy a bit of culture, it’s easy to make a day of it. Trains run frequently and the journey takes less than an hour. Cambridge is even closer and there is plenty to do there too. As well as great shopping and restaurants, there are the beautiful historic buildings and colleges to explore and if the weather is good you can always go for a punt on the river.
Duxford is less than 20 minutes from Stansted and is Europe’s premier aviation museum. It also contains the best collection of military vehicles, tanks and naval exhibits in England, so is ideal for those of you who enjoy seeing history brought to life. If you’re lucky your stay may even coincide with one of their world-famous air shows.
Even closer to Stansted Airport is Audley End House, an English Heritage property with a lake, enormous grounds and more than thirty stunningly decorated rooms. If you’d like to view the house interior then it’s probably wise to book a guided tour in advance so as not to miss out. Audley End House also has a cafe serving cakes and snacks to keep your strength up!
Stansted also has its own tourist attractions. There is Stansted Mountfitchet Castle and the House on the Hill Toy Museum to visit. Mountfitchet Castle takes you back in time to 1066 Norman England and has plenty to entertain a family for the day. The House on the Hill is the largest privately owned toy museum in Europe and boasts over 80,000 individual items from a range of eras.
