Things you may not know about Stansted Airport
Most people know that Stansted Airport is London’s third busiest and the fourth busiest in the UK, but did you know that it is also the most punctual airport in Europe, and the third most punctual in the world?
According to Flight Stats, an online flight tracking and airport information service, over 88% of scheduled flights left on time from Stansted during November this year, which is better than any other European airport. Stansted offers the most direct scheduled European flights in the world too, so it’s not because it is less busy either.
It serves 18.3 million passengers per year and flies to over 150 destinations in 31 countries. The most popular international destinations are Dublin, Alicante and Malaga (in Spain) and Rome. Within the UK the most popular are Edinburgh, Belfast and Glasgow, respectively.
Stansted Airport also won the UK’s best cleaned transport premises at the Golden Service Awards in November, so that was more good news for them. After all the kerfuffle last year about their plans for expansion and their subsequent withdrawal, they must have been pleased to get some good press for a change!
Some other good points about Stansted Airport are that they are the only UK airport to hold ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 standards and have been awarded Carbon Trust Standard. They installed a biomass boiler during their terminal extension which made development carbon neutral.
What we like most about Stansted though is its convenience. It’s easy to get to and from London on the Stansted Express and traffic is much less problematic than when travelling via Heathrow or Gatwick. There is no shortage of local attractions either, as we discussed in our last blog post Things to do near Stansted Airport.
