Stansted Airport Up for Sale
Competition Commission (CC) has made a ruling to the BAA that Stansted should be sold along with Gatwick and one of its Scottish airports.
After seven legal challenges by BAA over the last three years, the company has decided it won’t appeal this latest ruling from the Supreme Court.
Stansted is the UK’s fourth busiest airport with its main airlines being the low-cost liners offering great deals to travel to around 150 destinations in 32 countries. With approximately 133,500 flights passing through Stansted every year and approximately 17.5m passengers it no wonder Stansted is so busy.
Along with the many millions of passengers that pass through the airport each year the airport is also a major cargo centre with over 205,000 tonnes of cargo being handled yearly?
A Competition Commission executive says he believes that both airlines and passengers will benefit from new ownership of the airport as it will increase competition so this cannot be a bad thing.
Stansted is a major employer for this region as it employs over 10,000 people in various roles, making it a great asset to have in this region, not to mention all the flow on effects having a major airport gives to the area and its surrounding areas.
With Stansted being named for the last two consecutive years as the ‘world’s best airport for low-cost airlines’ by the Skytrax World Airport Awards, I am sure it will not be long before someone takes up the offer and buys this busy and much needed in the UK airport.
