  • This incredible number (17.5 million) means that London Stansted Airport is the third busiest of the London airports (after London Heathrow and London Gatwick naturally) and the fourth busiest in the United Kingdom.

Stansted Airport is home to 41 airlines, and is the UK’s 4th largest airport, servicing 22.8 million passengers a year.

The history of includes gaps in services, since its origins as a crucial USAAF base, which dates back to 1943 and World War II.

Stansted Airport as a USAAF base

  • The airfield was originally used as a bomber airfield and maintenance depot for B-26 aircraft until D-Day.
  • While the B-26 operations were moved to France after the withdrawal of the Americans, the location was used for housing German prisoners of war from March 1946 to August of 1947.
  • It wasn’t until 1949 that the history of Stansted Airport changed the identity of the past and started its destined path as a base for UK charter airlines, finally coming under control of BAA in 1966.

Stansted Airport Expansion Plans

Stansted Airport is owned by MAG, the Manchester Airports Group and they have recently submitted new plans to expand the Airport substantially. The proposal includes increased capacity to 160 million passengers each year. This has been submitted to tackle the growing demand.

One of the arguments for expansion is that without it another Country will take the lead meaning a missed opportunity for the UK to take advantage for the ever increasing number of people travelling by air. Stansted is ideally located, close to London and with good road and rail links could be the ideal Airport to take on the extra passengers.

If you have some spare time between flights or you are looking for somewhere to visit while you are in the Stansted area why not call in to Audley End House located just outside Saffron Walden in Essex about 20 minutes away from Stansted.

Audley End House was once owned by Henry VIII and was then known as Walden Abbey. It has entertained royalty and seen many changes in its lifetime with new wings added on then later removed.

Audley End House is only a third of its original size with many parts gradually demolished over the years, but the main house structure has remained mostly structurally unaltered.

Hatfield Forest is a vast ancient forest not far from Stansted and is a wonderful place to wander, to let the children run around, to go for a run,or to get back in touch with nature.

Hatfield Forest lies immediately south of Stansted Airport, it has trees that are over 1200 years old, along with a lake for fishing, boats to row around on the lake in summer along with bikes to hire.

Olympic Torch Passes through Stansted

Spectators came out in their hundreds on Saturday 7th July to watch the Olympic Torch make its way through Stansted. It was a proud moment for all who attended, with many waving flags or wearing the England colours to celebrate this amazing event. Even the rain showers could not dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

The torch was carried by three different bearers through the town and was a proud moment for all of them. They were picked from many hundreds of deserving nominees and was a once in a life time experience for them.
